The Dickens Fair, an annual event in the San Francisco Bay Area, calls itself a Christmas Fair and Victorian Holiday Party.
Christmas shopping in crowds? Bah! Wrestling over mass-produced trinkets? Humbug. Fortunately, this event resembles a shopping mall not one whit.
Although shops are available - dozens of small businesses offering artisinal goods. Gifts that say more than "I found parking on Black Friday." And you can peruse them at your leisure, while strolling the streets of Victorian London, a very festive place this time of year.
From opening at 11am until closing at 7pm, entertainments of every sort are available on six stages. Learn a sea shanty, listen to carolers, watch dancers. For the over-18 crowd, there's a saucy show behind closed doors. For the youngsters, games, rides on the carousel, Santa sightings, a parade with Mother Goose, even an old-fashioned Punch & Judy show.
And no need to wander off when hunger calls - simply visit a food vendor for traditional or contemporary fare.
At the end of a day at this party, you may be as tired as if you visited the mall; but you'll be so much happier.
